True Wealth

True wealth: what is it really? Often the subject of much controversy.

Many people still attach a currency value to anything they are involved in as their wealth. Wealth is money and can buy everything.

"In fact, it is the ultimate source of happiness and everything around me".

Is this true? Let's discuss this statement and you can come to your own conclusions.

Economics 101

Now, I must warn you, this portion is quite dry, so let's spice it up with a super financially rich individual as our villain or star.

A financially rich person drops into town and starts buying everything he or she needs and then wants. So, everyone in town starts to notice a brand new financial superstar. Tons of cash is what this person has.

So why would this person need any of the social graces after all? Money will buy all the services and loyalty necessary right?

Let's see if this is a sustainable and economical lifestyle.

At first, his costs of hired labour, e.g. butler, servants, employees in businesses, etc. were all at market value. Then, as time went on, inflation started to creep in. Plus, other competitors for his labour in this growing town started to encroach on his business success.

Now, since loyalty for this person is at a minimum or nonexistent, it stands to reason that his labour force would leave for the competitors, right?

So to keep them he has to bid up their loyalty cost by a significant enough margin to price out his competitors. In time, this goes on and on until which time this financial superstar will find that it is impossible to buy loyalty and still keep a profit.

In fact, depending on his ego, he may just throw in the towel and go elsewhere and start all over again.

Otherwise he or she faces the spectre of getting poorer. Yikes! Belay the thought!

Economics and Relationships

Okay, let's be more realistic in everyday life. People will generally not be so assisine about life and the way they treat the people around them This is usually the stuff of movies.

However, maybe, just maybe it does happen once in a while. But you see, it does serve to highlight some clear points.

That actually, you simply can't bribe your way to loyalty - it may work in the short term, but the reality is that that is lost within a very short time.

Have you ever gone to work for a relative and got underpaid? How long did your family loyalty last then?

You can't buy goodwill with money either - remember that in the above story people were willing to leave an abusive master for one that respects them at the same or marginally same price for their services?

This may seem simple and logical choice but sometimes the fear of not knowing oneself will stop one from taking the best course of action. Emotions get in the way of the best course of action.

Money - Good, Bad, Confusion

My main point with this article is to highlight the folly of assuming and in fact being taught by society and media that money is the end all and be all.

Whereever did that statement that "Money is the root of all evil" come from? It has been used prolifically but is actually a mangled proverb.

Yet, having lots of money has been portrayed as being the suave jetsetter being able to buy anything in life. Can there be anything more misleading about money?

So, is money good or bad? You already know the answer, reading this far. It's simply what you do with it. If it benefits people or you, it is good. If it is used to control others, well, how do like being enslaved?

In short, it is the value that money provides is the important matter.

Remember what inflation or purchasing power can do for you unit of currency. How much satisfaction or bang for your buck you finally get is what matters in life ultimately.

And oh, yes about the confusion part let's not be confused ourselves.

Remember that old edict about a fool and his money being soon parted? Well, it has been told, foretold and written about forever. But it is so true. And yes, I do know of a surprising number of people in this predicament.

In fact, once many years ago, I had even considered myself to be in that same boat. Many of us have been there in fact, in a large or small way, you know what I mean.

As long as we all learn to correct our mistakes, it makes us far more secure about what we do.

True Wealth - A Comparison

Now back to what true wealth is meant to be. In the distant past before money, there was value in all that we did.

If we caught more fish than we need, there is a value of exchange for something we need from another person who may have too much grain.

A productive family unit certainly has value. It's about the economics and satisfaction.

When money came about, it became so that people could use this value to exchange for a greater variety of goods, services or other satisfaction. Trade expanded greatly into many viable commercial activities.

Let me tell you of an example that happened not too many years ago.

During the second world war, the currency of Singapore was totally useless as a a currency as the Japanese yen was the occupying force for a few years.

People literally starved to death, without food and the means to provide value to their families. Then when the occupation was over, the accumulation of the Japanese currency was useless.

In fact, the freed people used them for kindling by the truck load.

And again starvation became a real threat. But you see, people do learn.

Being freed of the tyrannical rulers, they got to providing and rebuilding real value and wealth with their families and communities to their satisfaction.

Check it out if you wish. The facts are in the historical records.

So, it all boils down to the satisfaction one can get out of our needs and wants. It is the value, not just the money.

Great Wealth and Happiness,
Stephen Chua.

» [- Jun 2, 2008 at 3:55 AM -] Martha Cosby says: What you say is so true. I worked for a rather grouchy old fart of a boss (pardon my French as I truly loathed him) that always shortchanged my pay, and sometimes conveniently forgot to pay me. To make things worse, he was my uncle and my mother's brother. That was my life until very recently when I got the guts to leave that old @@@@ and got a better paying job. Better, yet, me and my brother found an apartment to live in. It is a condo and we decided to buy it. We are still not sure if it is the right thing to do as we are still in our early twenties and thought this might be a good investment and build our own true wealth and not for some grouchy old man that keeps cheating me. My friends say that we did the right thing but I'm really nervous because of all that real estate crash and all that. But we did get a huge discount of about 25% off the list price and very low special rates for it. Also, the condo corporation gave us a break from paying the maintenance for a whole year. Did you think we made a good deal? You know, I think my brother and I will come back and check things out. I love the stuff here. There is so much real world truth here. Thanks and God bless you. Martha Cosby.
